Abstract

The purpose of this review is to describe the importance of the interstitium in lung disorders caused by the inhalation of foreign materials. To do so, we first describe the cellular and noncellular components of the normal interstitium. With this as a background, we then review the current concepts of those mechanisms by which inhaled agents may induce acute and chronic lung disease. Whenever possible, the data and concepts presented will be those established in humans.
