The Smoky Mountain Math Teachers Circle (SM2TC) will be a professional learning community of teachers, mathematicians, and middle school educators who meet regularly to do mathematics. The new Smoky Mountain Math Teachers’ Circle will be open to teachers from Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon and Swain counties. Our fundamental beliefs are that when teachers engage in mathematical problem solving activities, they further their own mathematical knowledge as well as develop pedagogical content knowledge, and that raising mathematical content knowledge is a critical component of teacher professional development. We propose to build a supportive community based on shared mathematical endeavors. Membership in such a community will allow teachers to re-kindle their interest for the subject matter while gaining confidence in their ability to share it with others.
