Abstract

The project integrates several existing Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities (CMU) facilities and services with new biodiesel capability. By leveraging several favorable site-specific factors, we aim to generate data to support the business case for CMU to produce biodiesel and promote alternative energy production among other municipalities. The specific research objectives to be funded by $99,976 from the NC Green Business Funds are listed below. The associated measurable outcome deliverables are listed in parentheses. (i) Master Planning that includes a Life Cycle Assessment and Economic Analysis for the demonstration and the eventual scale-up (Master Planning Document); (ii) An Oil Seed Crop Irrigated with CMU Reclaimed Water (Canola Oil, Sunflower Oil, with Documentation of crop yield); (iii) Biodiesel Produced from Crops and Brown Grease (Biodiesel Fuel and Documentation of yields); (iv) Work Force Development Educational Materials (One (1) credit course; three (3) Technical Training Modules (non-credit); and Six (6) Student Experiential Reports); (v) Project Dissemination including Train the Trainer, Agricultural, and Utilities Workshops with sustainable options for converting waste grease to fuels. (Training and Workshop Materials on Sustainable Options for Utility Grease Management to be presented at state conferences.)
